Frequently Asked Questions About Explosion-Proof Hoists
What is the difference between a Class I, Division 1 and a Class I, Division 2 hoist?
Class I means flammable gases or vapours may be present. In Division 1 they may be present during normal operation, frequent maintenance or repair, or because of equipment failure. In Division 2 they are normally confined in closed containers, kept out by mechanical ventilation, or the area is next to a Division 1 location. The Spacemaster EX Div 1 hoist adds different motors, a larger control panel, armoured motor cables, intrinsically safe control and limit-switch circuits with barrier relays, and stainless steel data and warning plates.
Which groups and temperature classes do the Spacemaster EX hoists cover?
The Class I, Division 1 hoist is rated for Groups C & D, T4 (also marked Class I, Zone 1, IIB, T4). The Class I, Division 2 hoist is rated for Groups B, C & D, T3 (also marked Class I, Zone 2, IIB+H2, T3). Both carry the CSA C/US mark.
What capacities are available?
Division 1 hoists come in 1–20 tons (1,000–20,000 kg). Division 2 hoists come in 1–80 tons (1,000–80,000 kg). Division 2 crane packages come in 1.5–80 tons (1,600–80,000 kg).
What does "intrinsically safe-wired" mean?
Intrinsically safe circuits keep electrical and thermal energy below the level needed to ignite an explosive gas or dust atmosphere. On the Spacemaster EX Division 1 hoist, the control commands and limit switches use intrinsically safe circuits.
Are Spacemaster EX hoists CSA and ATEX approved?
Yes. Both models are CSA C/US approved. R&M also lists ATEX 94/9/EC (manufacturers) and 1999/92/EC (users) for the Spacemaster EX. Class and Division rated equipment can be used in the matching Zone-classified areas, as the NEC (505.9 and 505.20) and the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC C22.1) permit.
Can you supply a complete explosion-proof crane kit?
Yes. SafeLift Crane Aid supplies R&M Spacemaster EX modular crane packages for Class I, Division 2 locations, in top running or underrunning configurations from 1.5 to 80 tons. Options include non-sparking features such as bronze coated hooks, brass wheels and stainless steel wire rope.
